Japan nuke plant spews more radiation into sea

TOKYO (AP) (Apr. 5, 2011 1:49 AM ET) — The operator of a tsunami-disabled nuclear plant says radiation measuring several million times the legal limit has leaked into the sea over the past few days

Anti-nuclear protesters, many of them survivors of the atomic bomb dropped on Japan 66 years ago, take up their weekly posts outside the Chugoku Electric Power Company in Hiroshima. (Report from Japan: Meanwhile, in Hiroshima by David Gutnick/CBC, Mar 25, 2011)
The ground has already been cleared but when the Fukushima plant caught fire the Chugoku Electric Power Company put this project on hold. Temporarily.
"Japan's nuclear industry is very big, and very powerful. Politicians are very aware of how nuclear energy powers the factories that create jobs."

IAEA UPDATES

Summary of Reactor Unit Status at 04 April 2011 - 0500 UTC

from IAEA Briefing on Fukushima Nuclear Accident (4 April 2011, 12:15 UTC) -
TEPCO has identified a possible leakage path from the Turbine Building of Unit 2 to the sea via a series of trenches/tunnels used to provide power to the sea water intake pumps and supply of service water to the reactor and turbine buildings. Initial attempts on 2 April to stop the leak, by pouring concrete into the pit, were not successful. On 3 April, the top of the trench was broken open and polymer was poured into the trench in an attempt to stop the leakage of water to the sea through the pit, but leakage has not stopped as of 00:00 UTC on 4 April.

NISA have advised the IAEA that TEPCO have been given permission by the Government of Japan to discharge 10 000 ton of low level contaminated water from their radioactive waste treatment facility to the sea. This is in order to have sufficient capacity to store highly contaminated water found in the basement of the Unit 2 Turbine Building.

In addition TEPCO will discharge 1 500 ton of low level contaminated water in the sub-drain pit for Units 5 and 6 to prevent the water in the pit from leaking into the reactor buildings and potentially damaging safety-related equipment.

Democracy Now! - Obama Energy Plan Calls for Reducing Oil Imports, Affirms Nuclear Use

President Obama has unveiled a new energy policy seeking to reduce the use of foreign oil while reaffirming a commitment to nuclear energy. On Wednesday, Obama called for for reducing oil imports by a third over the next decade.

President Obama: "It’s important to recognize that nuclear energy doesn’t emit carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, so those of us who are concerned about climate change, we’ve got to recognize that nuclear power, if it’s safe, can make a significant contribution to the climate change question. We’re going to incorporate those conclusions and lessons from Japan in design and the building of the next generation of plants. But we can’t simply take it off the table."

rc: WHY NOT TAKE IT OFF THE TABLE? - is there too much money at stake? are too many vested interests? or what? - and "if it’s safe?" - well, IF is a huge word here, and the deal is that NUCLEAR POWER IS NOT SAFE. I think we have to take it off the table - THIS IS THE LESSON from Japan (and Chernobyl and thousands of "little leaks and spills") - the NEXT GENERATION should not include nukes at all.

We have already squandered the future of generations to come - those great great grandchildren of our own great grandchildren, who will (if we survive at all) have to deal with all the nuclear waste that has already been created. Many many generations to come will be shackled and harnessed by this terrible legacy. The least we can do now is to reverse course and put some billions of dollars into waste solutions rather toward building more inherently dangerous plants to create more waste that nobody knows what to do with.

Obama's plan is to loan the nuclear industry $36 billion dollars. I think we should yank their liability coverage along with all those sweet subsidies we taxpayers foot the bill for, and just declare nuclear power illegal! This has got to be our wake up call - nuclear power should be banned world-wide, with every resource possible dedicated to improving the future of our planet by cleaning up the mess we have made.

Germany's radioactive boars a legacy of Chernobyl

BERLIN (AP) — For a look at just how long radioactivity can hang around, consider Germany's wild boars.
A quarter century after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in the Soviet Union carried a cloud of radiation across Europe, these animals are radioactive enough that people are urged not to eat them. And the mushrooms the pigs dine on aren't fit for consumption either.
Germany's experience shows what could await Japan — if the problems at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant get any worse.
The German boars roam in forests nearly 950 miles (1,500 kilometers ) from Chernobyl. Yet, the amount of radioactive cesium-137 within their tissue often registers dozens of times beyond the recommended limit for consumption and thousands of times above normal.

US citizens monitor radiation levels from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear facility
Free Speech Radio News
News Segment - Length: 3:01 minutes (2.76 MB)
Federal officials say they continue to find low levels of radiation from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant in US rainwater samples, the most recent found in areas of California, Idaho and Minnesota. Officials say the levels are too low to represent any health risk but in response to growing concern, some citizens groups are collecting their own data. FSRN Correspondent Dave Brooksher brings us this report.

The Curse of Atomic Weapons and Power
by Ace Hoffman December 10th, 2007

Dear Readers,

On average, every working American spends about TWO DAYS A WEEK building, using, or paying for America's weaponry, and the means to convey that weaponry to where it will be used. At least a quarter of all fuel -- including nuclear fuel -- used by this country goes to war-related activities.

It is impossible to be a productive nation when so many raw materials and so much talent and time is spent on destruction.

Into Eternity
- a documentary film made available here thanks to Top Documentary Films

Every day, the world over, large amounts of high-level radioactive waste created by nuclear power plants is placed in interim storages, which are vulnerable to natural disasters, man-made disasters, and to societal changes.
In Finland the world’s first permanent repository is being hewn out of solid rock – a huge system of underground tunnels – that must last 100,000 years as this is how long the waste remains hazardous.

Once the waste has been deposited and the repository is full, the facility is to be sealed off and never opened again. Or so we hope, but can we ensure that?
And how is it possible to warn our descendants of the deadly waste we left behind? How do we prevent them from thinking they have found the pyramids of our time, mystical burial grounds, hidden treasures? Which languages and signs will they understand? And if they understand, will they respect our instructions?

While gigantic monster machines dig deeper and deeper into the dark, experts above ground strive to find solutions to this crucially important radioactive waste issue to secure mankind and all species on planet Earth now and in the near and very distant future.
Captivating, wondrous and extremely frightening, this feature documentary takes viewers on a journey never seen before into the underworld and into the future.

The Frogs Of Japan's Fukushima Dai-ich Reactor

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Japan. The firm that owns the nuclear power plants in Japan is knee deep in safety violations since 2003. This cartoon, might make you laugh, and it might not. Not to worry if it does not. This is a serious topic, and we create some cartoons simply to tell an important story. - Rick London / Londons Times
