Diablo Shutdown Marks End of Atomic Era | Shut it down NOW!

Diablo Shutdown Marks End of Atomic Era | Harvey Wasserman | Ecowatch
As worldwide headlines have proclaimed, California’s Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) says it will shut its giant Diablo Canyon reactors near San Luis Obispo, and that the power they’ve been producing will be replaced by renewable energy.
PG&E has also earmarked some $350 million to “retain and retrain” Diablo’s workforce, whose union has signed on to the deal, which was crafted in large part by major environmental groups.
On a global scale, in many important ways, this marks the highest profile step yet towards the death of U.S. nuclear power and a national transition to a Solartopian green-powered planet...

--- Shut it down NOW!

they say that they will shut Diablo Canyon, but not for another 9 years. that is 9 years too long, 9 more years of unacceptable risk.

"... Is this a clever move by PG&E announcing the closure of Diablo in 2024 & 2025 to prevent the Lands Commission from insisting on prohibiting once through cooling? which if they were legally and rightfully ruled against would mean the closure of Diablo by 2018 ... any WE WON'T BE FOOLED! This June 28th California State Lands Commission meeting is still very important and may be a chance to get the Devil shut down earlier. Nine years is a very long time! That's why the meeting of the Lands Commission is crucial it's a meeting happening simultaneously in 2 locations LIVE MTG in Sacramento at 10am JUN 28 ... Here's their website w/ detailed itinerary http://www.marchforenvironmentalhope.org/

here's a quote from Tim Judson, NIRS on that march:

"This march Shellenberger and Co. are planning on Friday is now an act of absurdity. The targets for renewables and efficiency in the agreement could definitely be achieved and exceeded well before 2024, and they should be. But the fact that PG&E signed onto an agreement to replace a large nuclear power plant with renewables and efficiency, and acknowledges that nuclear reactors are going to be an obstacle is hugely significant.

"As is the fact that PG&E has entered into a just transition plan, to minimize the impact on workers and community and prepare for decommissioning. Utilities are using the threats of layoffs and economic devastation to extort huge subsidies to prop up reactors all over the country. The agreement puts an end to that, and sets a precedent for the rest of the country."
