June 17 :: NO! US-Japan Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement 日米原子力協定反対デモ (Facebook event page)

Manhattan Project for a Nuclear-Free World is co-organizing a contingent to oppose the extension of the US-Japan Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement, and join the Women’s March to Ban the Bomb in NYC on June 17, 2017.

The Women’s March to Ban the Bomb (https://www.womenbanthebomb.org/) will meet at the Bryant Park around noon, and march to the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza by 4PM, so we are hoping that we meet on the steps of the NY Public Library at 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue at 11:45AM, and march together with signs and banners opposing the extension of US-Japan Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement. We hope that many of you can join us.

Regarding the US-Japan Agreement, it is about to mature in July 2018, andwill be automatically extended unless one of the countries notifies the other country six months prior to the termination date. At this time, it is very likely that the treaty will be extended.

Why do we need to oppose the US-Japan Nuclear Cooperation Treaty? Why the treaty is related to Ban the Bomb?

Experts: US Still 'Needlessly Vulnerable' to Fukushima-Style Disaster | Common Dreams

Fukushima "could have been a hundred times worse had there been a loss of the water covering the spent fuel in pools associated with each reactor," said co-author Frank von Hippel, a senior research physicist at Princeton. (Photo: Getty)

Nuclear industry pressured regulatory commission into low-balling consequences of meltdown, especially in case of reactor fire, new article says

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) did not adequately account for safety hazards when approving certain upgrades to nuclear sites around the U.S., meaning the risk of a Fukushima-like disaster caused by a reactor fire is still high, according to an article published in the journal Science on Friday.

Researchers from Princeton University and the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) argued that the NRC "relied on faulty analysis to justify its refusal to adopt a critical measure for protecting Americans from the occurrence of a catastrophic nuclear-waste fire at any one of dozens of reactor sites around the country."

The risk is especially high in the sites' cooling pools—basins that are used to store and reduce the temperatures of used radioactive fuel rods. Spent-fuel pools came into the international spotlight after the 2011 disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi site in Japan, in which an earthquake-triggered tsunami disabled the electrical systems needed for the cooling process, leading to meltdowns at three of six reactors.

NRC commissioners "did not adequately account for impacts of large-scale land contamination events," the scientists wrote. "Among rejected options was a measure to end dense packing of 90 spent fuel pools, which we consider critical for avoiding a potential catastrophe much greater than Fukushima."

Fukushima "could have been a hundred times worse had there been a loss of the water covering the spent fuel in pools associated with each reactor," said co-author Frank von Hippel, a senior research physicist at Princeton's Program on Science and Global Security (SGS), in a statement

A report from the 5.11 Monthly No Nukes Action rally・5/11 抗議集会からの報告 | No Nukes Action Committee

The scary mountain fire in the restricted area in Fukushima had started on April 29 and continued burning until a day before our rally. It had lasted for twelve days! 5000 people worked to put the fire out with hazmat suits. On April 8 it was recorded 3-9 times higher cesium label than previous day at the spots in nearby towns. But this mountain fire news never became the major news on any media.

Is this because the media’s self censor-ship?

The mountain fire was announced in one of speak-outs

The letter to PM Abe was written by Dan Marlin who has been still in and out of hospital.
And Yoko Clark read out his letter. Please read his letter attached bottom.
We will get together again at SF Japanese Consulate on June 11 at 3 pm.
Please join us!

Stop Cuomo’s costly nuclear plant bailout - NY Daily News

New Yorkers shouldn’t have to pay for energy they will never use. Which is why Gov. Cuomo should be consistent and close, along with Indian Point, three other outdated nuclear power plants near Rochester and Oswego.
Instead, he is taking $7.6 billion from New York ratepayers and giving it to a hugely profitable, Illinois-based energy company to keep the three plants open…

The continuing danger of radioactive contamination  at Fukushima is a threat not only to the people of Fukushima and Japan but the world. There are thousands of contaminated water tanks surrounding the broken nuclear plants and the government continues to push to re-open the plant. The cases of thyroid cancer area also growing and the government issuing the secrecy laws to prevent information about the continuing escalation of cancer cases throughout the country.
The drive for more nuclear power is now combined with the drive by the Abe administration to eliminate article 9 of the Japanese constitution which prevents offensive war. The escalation toward war in Asia and the building of more US military bases in Okinawa despite mass opposition of the population.
The Japanese Abe  government has  cut off money for housing benefits for the families while  it is spending billions of dollars to “decontaminate Fukushima” at  to build Henoko naval base and a new military airforce base in Okinawa. The bases will contain nuclear weapons which are not not supposed to be brought to Okinawa.
We call for the defense of the families in Fukushima and continued compensation by TEPCO.

Tell EPA to withdraw the OBAMA PAGs or “Protective Action Guides!” #petition

The Trump Administration wants to reduce regulatory burden and is asking what regulations can be withdrawn.
Tell the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to withdraw the Radioactive OBAMA PAGs or “Protective Action Guides!”
THE DEADLINE IS MAY 15, 2017!
The Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] is seeking input on regulations that may be appropriate for repeal, replacement, or modification.
SUBMIT YOUR COMMENTS ON DOCKET ID NO. EPA-HQ-OA-2017-0190 BY SUBMITTING THE FORM OR ON WWW.REGULATIONS.GOV
Ask the EPA to repeal the so called “Protective Action Guides” or PAGs--the 2017 Drinking Water PAGs and the 2013 PAGs. They are a burden on health and safety, on public and private water systems, on our health care system and on the American public.
On the very last day of the Obama Administration, Jan 19, 2017, the US EPA adopted UnProtective Action Guidance allowing radiation levels hundreds and thousands of times higher than currently allowed in drinking water and at cleaned-up Superfund sites.
TELL EPA TO WITHDRAW THE OBAMA PAGS OR “PROTECTIVE ACTION GUIDES!”
A-The “Protective” Action “Guides” are NOT PROTECTIVE. They allow thousands, and in at least one case, millions of times, more radioactivity in our drinking water than allowed under EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Act.
B-The “Protective” Action “Guides are NOT GUIDES. They are regulations in disguise—they are called guides but deceptively circumvent the Safe Drinking Water limits on radioactivity in drinking water shifting the burden and liability for cleanup to the local municipal water districts or private water suppliers.
C-Rather than only applying in emergencies, like the Fukushima disaster or a big dirty bomb, they could be used after any “incidents...that warrant consideration of protective action,” like a spill or accidental release.
The EPA can prevent unnecessary burdens from dangerous high radiation levels in our drinking water by repealing the radioactive PAGs adopted in the final moments of the Obama Administration.

After 60 years of nuclear power, the industry survives only on stupendous subsidies - The Ecologist

Almost 60 years since the world's first commercial nuclear power station began to deliver power to the UK's grid, the industry remains as far from being able to cover its costs as ever, writes Pete Dolack. But while unfunded liabilities increase year by year, governments are still willing to commit their taxpayers' billions to new nuclear plants with no hope of ever being viable.

If the owners and operators of nuclear reactors had to face the full costs, no one would have built a nuclear reactor in the past, no one would build a reactor today, and anyone who owned one would exit the nuclear business as quickly as they could.
The ongoing environmental disaster at Fukushima is a grim enough reminder of the dangers of nuclear power. But nuclear does not make sense economically, either.
The entire industry would not exist without massive government subsidies. Quite an insult: Subsidies prop up an industry that points a dagger at the heart of the communities where ever it operates.

The building of nuclear power plants drastically slowed after the disasters at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, so it is at a minimum reckless that the latest attempt to resuscitate nuclear power pushes forward heedless of Fukushima's discharge of radioactive materials into the air, soil and ocean…

EMERGENCY AT HANFORD | Beyond Nuclear press statement on #Hanford tunnel collapse onto train cars storing #radioactive waste. #nuclear http://bit.ly/2qnVJfw (PDF) | NEWS LINKS

NEWS FROM BEYOND NUCLEAR

Another radioactive waste accident, this time at Hanford, shows nuclear dump sites are not under control

TAKOMA PARK, MD, May 9, 2017 -- A tunnel at the Hanford Nuclear Site in Washington State collapsed today on top of railcars stored there that contain “mixed” radioactive waste, an accident that local watchdog group, Hanford Challenge, describes as a “crisis.”
The tunnel is located next to the Plutonium Uranium Extraction Facility, also known as PUREX, and contains substances classified as “dangerous waste.” The collapse prompted an initial evacuation of workers in the area that then spread to a “take cover” order for the entire site.

The already embattled Hanford site was originally part of the Manhattan Project, and a major supplier of military plutonium. It houses 177 storage tanks containing liquid radioactive sludges, some of which have been leaking radioactive effluent that could eventually threaten the Columbia River. Cleanup at the site did not begin until 1989. The Hanford tunnel collapse may have been caused by soil subsidence due to vibrations from nearby road works.

"The current unfolding crisis at Hanford, the bursting barrel at Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico in 2014, and the exploding radioactive waste dump in Beatty, Nevada in 2015, show that radioactive waste management is out of control," said Kevin Kamps, Radioactive Waste Watchdog at Beyond Nuclear.
page1image14192 page1image14352

”That’s why the Yucca Mountain dump in Nevada, the Canadian dump targeted at the Great Lakes shore, and the parking lot dumps in Texas and New Mexico must be blocked, to prevent future disasters," Kamps added.

WIPP, a radioactive waste repository mainly for military waste and situated near Carlsbad, NM, suffered an accident on February 14, 2014. The explosion there released radioactivity that exposed workers who were stationed above ground at the time and forced an almost three-year shutdown of the site. The disaster cost $2 billion and counting. As at Hanford, a relatively minor event — the use of the wrong kitty litter for cleanup — was blamed for the WIPP accident, prompting serious questions about competence and safeguards at such critically dangerous sites.

A leak in a massive nuclear waste storage tank at Hanford in April 2016 was described as "catastrophic" by a former tank farm worker there, even as the U.S. Department of Energy tried to downplay the problem.

Most commercial radioactive waste is currently stored at reactor sites around the country. However, military radioactive waste has continued to pose an on-going storage nightmare. Beyond Nuclear advocates for commercial reactor waste to be stored on-site but in facilities known as Hardened On-Site Storage, or HOSS, and not in the risky pools and inadequate waste casks, as is the current practice.

Wildfires near Fukushima reignite Chernobyl-like fears of contamination - Bellona.org

Wildfires that broke out in a mountain forest near the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant last weekend are causing worries that radiation from the 2011 disaster might be spread with the smoke, dust and flames.
Eight helicopters from Fukushima, Miyagi and Gunma prefectures were dispatched to Mount Juman in Naime in the north east of the country, where radiation levels have remained high since the Fukushima plant experienced a triple meltdown in the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986.
When these helicopters couldn’t stop the blaze, said the Manichi, local officials summoned help from the Ground Self-Defense Force, a branch of the Japanese military.
The fire was apparently started by lighting in the abandoned area, which the Japanese government has designated as a “difficult-to-return” zone, meaning that evacuees of the initial disaster have not returned home due to persistently high radiation measurements.
The dangers arising from the fires in the irradiated area are similar to those that Russia and Ukraine combated when wildfires ripped through areas surrounding Chernobyl and the Mayak Chemical Combine during a drought-racked summer in 2010.
Fires around nuclear accident sites can spread radionuclides like cesium-137, strontium-90 and plutonium that can travel with the wind, posing a risk of internal exposure to anyone who might inhale them, said Anton Beneslavsky, a firefighter who worked to extinguish the blazes near Chernobyl, according to the International Business Times.
“This is a health concern because when these unstable atoms are inhaled, people become internally exposed to radiation,” he wrote in a blog post for Greenpeace Russia…

Yucca Mountain: Serpent Swimming Westward – Indigenous Action Media

(27 APRIL 2017) The Trump administration & Congress are renewing the threat to turn sacred Yucca Mountain, located on Western Shoshone Lands near Las Vegas, Nevada, into a massive nuclear waste dump.
Yesterday, on the 31st anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce held a hearing in Washington, DC to initiate the legislative process.
Congress is considering amendments to the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act that would restart  operations that began in 1982.

If the Yucca Mountain project is allowed to proceed, it would mean transport of highly radioactive waste from throughout the country’s nuclear power plants to this site. More than 70,000 tons of spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste would be dumped inside the sacred mountain…

Yucca Mountain is located on Western Shoshone land. The NCAC has also legally challenged U.S. federal ownership of the site as a violation of the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley.
